If you are driving in Kerala, you might want to be extra careful from June 5 onwards. That’s because the state government has decided to impose fines for traffic violations detected by AI-enabled cameras installed across the state.
These cameras are part of a project to improve road safety and reduce accidents in Kerala. They use artificial intelligence to identify and record various types of violations, such as speeding, jumping signals, overloading, helmetless riding, etc.
The project was launched in April 2023 and has been under trial since then. According to Transport Minister Antony Raju, the project has already shown positive results in reducing violations and improving traffic discipline.
However, the project has also faced criticism and opposition from some quarters. The opposition parties have alleged corruption and irregularities in the camera deal and have demanded a judicial inquiry into it. They have also planned to stage protests in front of the cameras on June 5.
The minister has refuted these allegations and challenged the opposition to prove them. He has also clarified some of the rules and regulations regarding the fines and exemptions.
Here are some of the key points you need to know about the AI camera project:
- There are 726 AI cameras installed in various locations across the state. Out of these, 692 are currently active and the rest will be operational soon.
- The cameras will start issuing fines from 8 am on June 5. The fine amount will vary depending on the type and severity of the violation.
- The violators will receive a notice of fine through SMS or email. They can pay the fine online or at designated kiosks within 15 days. If they fail to do so, they will face legal action.
- The cameras will also capture the images of the violators and their vehicles. These images will be stored in a central database and will be used as evidence in case of disputes or appeals.
- The cameras will not exempt any VIPs or government officials from the fines, except those vehicles permitted by the union government.
- The cameras will also monitor the condition and maintenance of the cameras. If any camera is damaged or tampered with by anyone, the government will take strict action against them.
- The government has also relaxed the rule regarding children wearing helmets on motorcycles. For now, no fine will be levied if a single child below 12 years travels on a motorcycle beside a pillion rider. However, this is subject to change after receiving clarification from the union government.
- The government has also released a district-wise report of the violations detected by the cameras on June 5. According to this report, a total of 38,520 violations were recorded in 12 hours from 8 am to 8 pm. Kollam recorded the highest number of cases (4,778) and Malappuram recorded the lowest number (545).
The AI camera project is a bold and innovative initiative by the Kerala government to ensure road safety and discipline. However, it also requires public awareness and cooperation to make it a success. As responsible citizens, we should follow the traffic rules and regulations and avoid any unnecessary violations or penalties.
